    Book details

This book offers guidance and enrichment for first time and experienced readers of the Old Testament.

"An excellent new resource for Old Testament studies.Written from an avowedly Christian perspective, the Companion surveys the history of interpretation of each major section of the Old Testament in the patristic, mediaeval, Reformation, and modern periods, and then turns to a global perspective and the use of the OT in ministry and mission.Accessible as well as learned, and with up-to-date and comprehensive advice on further reading." (John Barton, Oriel and Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture, Emeritus at Oxford University and Emeritus Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford.)The chapters cover exactly what modern scholars want to teach in their classes: precisely the right intellectual enrichment, a good dose of how Scripture was received in the Christian tradition, and fine examples of how the Old Testament can be relevant in today´s world. (Kristin De Troyer)How was the Old Testament interpreted by Christians through the ages ? How can it impact ministry and mission today ? At last a book which focusses on these major questions, answering them clearly and at length, in a refreshing approach that will both enlighten students and help professors to renew their own teaching. I am impressed by this tour de force. (Matthieu Richelle)

This is a really wonderful work – thoroughly engaging, accessible, and insightful. The chapters range across the different genres of Old Testament biblical literature, such that the reader is given a full treatment of the Old Testament. They often adopt a historical approach, which allows the reader to have the benefit of understanding not only the content and character of the biblical books but also the way the church has interpreted them over the centuries. Origen, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, etc – discussion of various figures punctuate the chapters in ways that I found extremely helpful! The chapters are well written and superbly clear. It’s also evident that the authors are experts on the genres about which they’re writing—the exhaustive endnotes make this profoundly evident (in addition to the chapters themselves). Issues of canonicity and translation are taken up, the deuterocanonical books discussed, modern theories on biblical authorship engaged with, etc. Charts occasionally appear in the text outlining various things, but this is not done in an obtrusive manner. It’s done in such a way that a natural reading of the text is still easily accomplished. Last but not least, it has a good, detailed set of indices (bib references, sources, names, and subjects), which is always so helpful! I thoroughly enjoyed this – it’s a fine, detailed, extremely-thoughtful, and contemplative introduction to the Old Testament!
